Production Schedule

  • We will start filming on the 6th of October, therefore it is necessary to get our costumes sorted before this. They are already available, but to make them easily accessible we will be committed to our planned filming dates.
  • Our group don't need permission to film in locations because our music video is going to be recorded in public places or in group members homes. This makes our filming more flexible as if someone suddenly can't make it, we can reorganise without contacting any outside source e.g. the owner of a building.
  • On the 7th and 8th of October we will complete our filming at the skate park and woods. These locations are very close to each other, so we could potentially get both done on the same day if shooting goes well. The shots for this are mainly long shots to show isolation, as well as a variety of close ups to illustrate the actors feelings and reactions to events.
  • At every shoot we will need all crew members (Ryan, Joe and Rory) as we don't require any additional help from outside the group, and we need the cameraman, actor, director and producer at every shoot in order for filming to be as efficient as possible.
  • On the 9th of October we will be recording the scenes in the bedroom and the dark beaten up room as they are at the same location and the shots aren't too difficult (over-the-shoulder shot, point of view shot and close up as examples).
  • The 10th will consist of us filming at some shops to show our actor going about their every day life. Afterwards, we will review our footage and decide if we need to do any pick up scenes. yet again we will incorporate a variety of close ups and long shots to demonstrate isolation and emotion of the actor.

  • Pickup scenes will be shot on the 11th once we decide which scenes need to be re shot.

Location Reconnaissance

Skate park

Pros:
  • Our audience may be interested in this location because many hip hop artists including Earl Sweatshirt skate.
  • Connotations of hip-hop are elements of street art such as graffiti and creativity which is what artists strive to present to the world.
  • Urban culture is represented here, and if it is being applied to hip-hop then it is more accurately street culture e.g. skate boarding, street art and streetwear. The majority of our questionnaire participants stated they would like to see an urban/suburban setting, making this even more applicable.
  • Hip-hop artists also wear skate boarding/street wear brands e.g. Palace, Supreme, Thrasher etc.
Cons:
  • Not all hip-hop artists like skate boarding or wear its brands so it isn't 100% accurate.
  • It is an outside location, therefore bad weather could delay our filming.
  • The debris in some of the shots isn't aesthetically pleasing.

This location is relevant to our concept because it will be able to effectively show our actor being lonely, which is one of our intentions. Hip-hop also originated on the street, which is where skate boarding occurs too. In addition to this existing hip hop artists associate themselves with the sport. More specifically, the artist in question, Earl Sweatshirt, is a skateboarder too. Finally, our audience might also like skateboarding as a hobby too. Despite this, it isn't guaranteed that they like skate boarding, but they might like street art.

Bed room

Pros:
  • Accurately represents the life of someone who takes an interest in hip-hop.
  • Can manipulate lighting to our intentions due to it being in a controlled setting.
  • Features brands of companies who sell hop-hip cultured clothing e.g. Supreme, The Hundreds, Carhartt , Vans etc.
  • On the walls, skating posters are clearly visible. Skating is a part of our music video due to its relation to hip-hop, hence it is necessary to create a realistic correlation between the actors room and hobbies.
  • Has a teenage/young adult look to it due to how much the room is decorated in hip-hop related aspects, thus positively reflecting our target audience.
Cons:
  • Having 4 walls surrounding your set limits the movement you can perform in that space.
This location is appropriate for our concept because it allows personal insight into what the actor is like and it opens the possibility of the audience relating to them, enhancing an emotionally gripping concept. The best feature of this location is how it accurately several connotations of hip-hop such as clothing and skating, therefore it has relevance to the song as well as the individual himself. Also, we don't need to consider weather implications because it is inside, meaning we can film here regardless of the weather conditions.

Woods

Pros:
  • The woods can be an intimidating place, which precisely reflects the emotions of our actor at that time.
  • Earl Sweatshirt falls under a diverse sub genre of hip-hop, therefore it seems necessary to be diverse in our location selection too. A spooky location fits in well with a slow tempo and beat too.
  • It's location is helpfully situated next to the skate park, enabling us to efficiently film two scenes from our video with less hassle. We could even make it more fluent by keeping the camera rolling as the actors transition from one location to the other.
Cons
  • Some may argue that every aspect of the video has to be related to hip-hop, as the woods don't really have a direct link to hip-hop.
  • Weather implications can prevent us filming on our desired day.
  • There is a limit to how much the lighting can be manipulated.
This location is appropriate for our concept due to their connection with one another. The lyrics, pace and beat to 'HIVE' are quite mellow and a spooky back ground will fit well with these features. People expose their emotions most when they are intimidated, and hopefully this scene from the music video will trigger the emotional response that we are aiming for. In case of undesirable conditions, we will have to delay our shooting because there isn't an alternative to some woods because of how unique they are. Although, we could carry out the shoot anyway as the rain and bad weather will positively contribute to the scene, providing the quality of the image is not disturbed.

Dark building

Pros:
  • Has similar connotations to the woods in relation to it being a spooky and intimidating place which accurately correlates to the beat and tempo.
  • Will contribute to the scary atmosphere that is being depicted in the video.
  • It is inside, therefore, weather implications cannot negatively effect our filming.
  • Nevertheless, 'Hive' is quite a diverse sub genre of hip-hop so it seems necessary too be diverse in our presentation of the song.
Cons:
  • Dark room so will need to specifically manipulate lighting with professional effect.
  • As again, with the woods, it could be argued that this has no relevance to hip-hop.
The dark room is appropriate for our concept because it can help elicit the response we are desiring. A dark, spooky room will hopefully scare the audience into releasing an intimidated emotion, thus making them feel sympathetic of how the actor may feel. We won't need an alternative location either because the room is inside.

I feel that the costumes we have used in our work are in relation to the genre and the overall theme of music video. we have brain stormed a number of different brands that would fit into our music video the best. First we established the kind of style we wanted in our music video. The Song we have used is a very dark and has very strong emotions though out the song, Therefore we felt it was only right to use colours that match the emotion being portrayed. We researched the costumes used in music videos that have the same themes as we intend to use in our music video. If you look at the photos above this paragraph we see three different music videos with the same themes as Chum the song we are using in our music video. If we look at the costumes use we see a general theme of the items of clothing. If we look we see that two of the three photos the artists are wearing hats. Hats are seen as an essential part of contemporary streetware. We could see these hats as a way of masking their identity and could have some deeper meanings. we feel that hats will be a great add on to the costumes that we are going to use in our music video. We also see that in these videos that the costumes are very casual but heavily brand orientated. With this in mind we went back and researched some brands that are associated with Hip Hop Music. The fist brand we looked at was Supreme, Supreme is a New York Based skateboarding brand. This brand has a played a big part in hip hop clothing in the last 10 years. Supremes integration into the music industry is though the clothing lines they collaborate with artists working together to release a capsule collection. The most recent being with the hip hop artist Gucci Mane this shows that Supreme would be appropriate to use in our hip hop music. Now that we have established the brands we feel would be appropriate to use we need to focus on in the items of clothing. Due to the style of the hip hop artist who created our song Earl Sweatshirt. Earl sticks to a skating kind of style of clothing which is what we felt would suit our music video the most. So what we can take from this extensive research into hip hop outfits is that we are going to implement to contemporary mix of streetware and basic pieces to create a modern feel that also conforms to the dark , deep and depressing theme of the music video we are going to produce. I personally feel that getting the outfits correct is a vital aspect of the music video , due to the fact that if the costumes didn't fit the video it would look wrong and ruin the overall production. therefore i feel that this secondary research taken out will benefit my work and unsure that we have all aspects of our outfits justified and planned before we go into the the filming stages of out production. n

Costume 1

This is the costume that we have given the artist in our music video. We have tried to conform to the typical conventions of the underground hip hop genre out music falls into. Firstly we can see the brands that we have chosen to wear. Firstly we have chosen to wear a Carhartt jacket, Carhartt is a brand which has made a name of itself through hip hop music most iconically being worn by the likes of Ice cube out of N.W.A. Therefore we felt implementing such an iconic brand into our music video will help to develop our work and make it that much more detailed and relevant. Next we have featured a Diamond Supply x Travis Scott Hoodie. This is another item of clothing which is relevant to the music we are using. Travis Scott is a hip hop artist which picked up popularity about the time that "Hive" the song we are using in our music video. As well as Travis Scott being a similar artist to what we are doing Diamond Supply is also a clothing brand which is relevant to the hip hop genre of music. The Artist Earl Sweatshirt who is behind the song we are using is also a fan of skateboarding , Diamond Supply is well established skate brand linking our outfits to the music which we are creating a video for. I feel that doing the extra research into the brands have helped us to build the depth of the detail into our work and will help us to produce a well rounded music video

Costume 2

Above this text is the costume that our second actor has worn in our music video. As you can see we decided to use a majority of dark colours. this is due to the atmosphere of the song which is dark and sinister this has been reflected in the dark colours used. but to show our creative intentions we added a small change to the dark colour scheme by featuring a bright coloured hoodie. This is due to this colour of hoodie being very popular in contemporary fashion. We have highlighted this feature by our secondary research into that contemporary artist are wearing in their content. For footwear we have to go with Chuck Taylor's, these are potentially the most iconic footwear of all time. Since the 60's converse have been adapted by a number of different of different social groups and is a very versatile shoe. This shoes has been adapted into our work due to the street skating association Earl our artist and the Chuck Taylor shoe has. The next point of analysis in our work is the 'Fuck the Population' brand we have implemented through the hat that the artist is wearing. This brand is a new up and coming brand which we have identified through out our artist research. We noticed artist such as $ui$ide Boys have been seen a number of time wearing the brand. therefore we knew that this brand is relevant to our genre, but we also knew that not many people were aware of the brand so we have taken a risk featuring this brand into our work. But due to this brand picking up pace around the time that we have produced this video which could show my groups creativity and knowledge of the genre of music that we are creating content for.

Mood board

This photo shows more factors which we took inspiration for our music video. This photo shows this model wearing a supreme box logo. supreme is one of the most iconic brands in contemporary streetwear.By featuring brands like this in our music video we will hook readers into our content as well as have more aspect associated with the song and hip hop music in general.

This photo shows Earl Sweatshirt the artist but this isn't the inspiration I gathered from this photo. The use of black and white blocks out distractions and will help the audience to focus on the song. The colours also help set the scene of a dark and unsetting visuals to match the songs lyrics. I also felt that the costumes used in this video matched what we were looking to use in our version. the use of well known streetwear brands but also the use of small features with add more the the video. One example of this is the back of earls jacket which says "WTF is going on", this can be interoperated into a way of adding more confusion and sadness into this song.

This candle lit room sparked some inspiration into what we wanted to use into our music video. The overall theme of this song is an unhappy depression song. The use of this setting for the music video is that the dark colour and minimal lighting gives the impression of an unhappy place which can help us portray our overall theme.

Actors

Ryan Sheedy, Age 17, Highdown School (left).
Rory Taplin, Age 18, Highdown School (right).
Myself and Ryan are to be used as the actors in the video for our interest and knowledge in the hip hop genre. We are suitable to represent the genre because of our styles being influenced by hip hop i.e. Palace, Adidas, Supreme to name a few. We are also within the age range shown in our survey which makes it easier for the audience to relate to the story. We also know the song chum by Earl Sweatshirt among other titles by the artist which will help the actors to accurately portray the feelings represented in the song
